Current Study of the Institute for Employment Research IAB: The Regional Importance of Crafts for Employment and Training in Germany
The importance of craftsmanship for the labor market is the highest among all federal states in Lower Saxony. The Lower Saxon craft reached in the study period, after Hesse, Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg, the fourth highest employment growth of all German territorial countries. Of great importance for the above-average development in Lower Saxony, the trades for industrial needs as well as the construction and the finishing trades.
The contribution to the training of craft is basically more than twice as high as its share of employment. At the federal state level, Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Rhineland-Palatinate have the highest percentage of training. In trades such as non-trades, the number of trainees declined in the period from 2010 to 2016, and also fell more sharply in craft trades in almost all of western Germany. Lower Saxony recorded the nationwide lowest decline in non-craft and the second lowest in craft.
